Minimalist Packing List for Females:  Essential Items and Practical Tips

Welcome back! Did you download The Ultimate Trip Planner, yet?

Are you tired of lugging around a giant suitcase on your travels? Does the thought of unpacking a suitcase full of unused clothing after a long trip make you cringe? Have you ever dreamed (or almost acted) on the impulse to toss that ginormous, heavy suitcase into the Grand Canal in Venice? If so, then this minimalist packing list for females is for you.

It’s time to lighten your load and enjoy all the benefits of packing light.

So, I did it again. Traveling to Key West, Florida, during the hot summer month of July and packing way too much, I again incurred a heavy baggage tariff. Fifty bucks, to be exact — not the best way to start a vacation.

It’s been a while since I made this mistake. Maybe the last couple of years of less travel has me out of practice. Who knows? But it happened again. It’s time to reel it in and return to packing light, mindful, and sensible. So, I made a list (the solution to all), a minimalist packing list specifically for females, because you know those dudes can pack two shirts, two shorts, a pair of socks, a couple of underwear, forget their swim trunks, and travel on.

This minimalist packing list for females is to be used as a guide and is not specific to any length or type of travel. You will need to add or subtract items depending on the length of travel, climate, activities, and where you are staying. For example, if you are traveling to Breckenridge for a ski vacation, you will need to add a winter hat, scarf, warm gloves, and snow boots. In contrast, if you spend a week on a yacht in the British Virgin Islands, you will only need swimsuits, cover-ups, and flip-flops. If you plan a hiking vacation, add comfy hiking boots. Use this packing list as a guide and add specifics based on your activity plan.

Benefits of Minimalist Packing.

Let’s explore how minimalist packing can help free you up—physically and mentally—during your next vacation.

Here are a few benefits of minimalist packing.

  • Minimalist packing forces you to consider what items are absolutely essential for your trip and NOT items that you MIGHT need.
  • You won’t incur a “Heavy Suitcase Tariff Charge,” saving you about $50.
  • Lighter luggage makes getting through security much easier (and faster).
  • You don’t have to lug around that giant suitcase. Remember when I mentioned tossing my suitcase into the Grand Canal? It almost happened. I was this close.
  • You don’t have to unpack all that stuff upon return from your vacation.
  • Giant suitcases aren’t trendy.
  • With a smaller, lighter suitcase, your body will have less wear and tear. If you are kind to your back and shoulders, you won’t need a Physical Therapist when you return from your travels.
  • If you pack light, you leave room to make a few fun purchases during your trip, like those cute vacation ornaments and shot glasses.
  • And, honestly, it’s just way easier to get around if you pack light.

Let’s Start With The Essentials.

  • Passport.  Make sure your passport is not out of date. Lock it up in the safe at the hotel (if available) as soon as you arrive at your destination. To be on top of things and prepared beyond measure, create a digital backup by emailing yourself an image of the passport AND take a photo and store it safely on your phone’s camera roll.
  • Driver’s License.
  • Credit card and debit card.  Also, notify your credit card company and your bank that you will be traveling.
  • Cash.

A few tips on credit card choices.

Find a credit card that does not incur foreign transaction fees. Also, use a travel credit card that provides mileage and travel rewards.

Bring a widely accepted credit card. For example, American Express doesn’t always work, even with local travel.

The Necessary Toiletries for the Minimalist Packing List.

  • Shampoo and Conditioner.  If staying at a hotel or resort, they often have shampoo and conditioner available. However, if you have a particular brand you prefer, fill these and pack them. I have also used these dry shampoo and conditioner bars that I love.
  • Deodorant
  • Toothpaste, a toothbrush, & dental floss
  • Hairbrush
  • Hair Ties
  • And a razor.
  • Skincare (face wash, moisturizer, sunscreen)
  • Chapstick
  • Body wash (often supplied at hotels, so maybe we can leave that off the list).
  • Makeup if you must. Pack tinted sunscreen like Cotz Flawless Complexion Tinted Sunscreen (SPF 50) plus tinted chapstick. If you have plans for a night out, a quick eye refresher with Thrive sticks Eye Brightener in Champagne and Muna and mascara is all you need to add.
  • Tweezers and Nail Clippers
  • Don’t pack your blow dryer; most hotels and resorts supply these items.

Create a Capsule Wardrobe.

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of clothes and accessories that can be easily mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Think about versatile pieces like t-shirts, jeans, and blouses that you can dress up or down depending on the occasion. Remember a few statement accessories to add personality to your look. And choose fabrics that don’t wrinkle easily for on-the-go packing.

When creating your capsule wardrobe, pick two or three colors you like best and stick with them throughout your wardrobe pieces. Neutral colors like black, white, navy blue, grey, rose gold, and olive green are all great choices, as you can easily pair them with each other or various other colors. In addition, add items such as cardigans, sweaters, or lightweight jackets for cooler days and evenings and an LBD (little black dress) for special occasions if needed.

Accessories are vital components when creating a capsule wardrobe because they allow you to quickly change an outfit without packing more clothes. Statement fashion necklaces are great ways to add interest to plainer tops, while scarves are perfect for adding color and texture to any outfit. Hats can also make any outfit stand out while providing extra protection from the sun during outdoor activities.

Here is an easy baseline capsule wardrobe. Again, cater this to the climate and your planned activities.

  • 3 T-shirts. I love a crisp white t-shirt or tank top that will coordinate with anything. However, I struggle to keep a white T clean and fresh while traveling. I still bring one, though.
  • 2 Tank Tops
  • 1 or 2 Blouses for Dress Up
  • 2 Pair of Shorts (unnecessary on a ski trip)
  • Jeans (unnecessary on a yacht in the BVIs)
  • LBD (Little Black Dress) if you plan a dressy night out. Or a sundress that can be dressed up or down.
  • A sweater or jacket indoors, even in warm climates, can be chilly.
  • 2 Workout sets (shirts and leggings or shorts). Use for working out in the gym, hiking, or strolling the lovely streets of your destination.
  • Pajamas
  • 1 Pair of Joggers. Use for lounging, sleeping, and being dressy and stylish. Joggers are perfect for flights and long road trips as well.  These are my favorites.
  • 6 Underwear
  • 2 Bralettes and 2 Sports Bras
  • 4 Pairs of Socks (I always add a super cozy pair for sleep).
  • 2 Swimsuits and 1 Cover Up (For more on packing for a week on a boat in the BVIs, read this).
  • Sunglasses

When it comes to shoes, make sure they are comfortable enough to wear all day without causing pain. Choose versatile shoes like trainers or sandals to have something suitable for any activity. And bring shoes that can be dressed up or dressed down.

  • 1 Pair of Running or Walking Shoes. Use interchangeably for the gym, long walks, or hiking.
  • 1 Pair of Sandals that can be dressed up or down and are comfortable.
  • Accessories add personality and style to your outfits, such as a fashion bracelet, necklace, scarf, or cute headband. Don’t pack the bling; it only brings attention to you for thieves, plus you don’t want to lose expensive jewelry.

Creating a capsule wardrobe is an art form; it takes practice but once mastered, it makes traveling much more effortless. It will help keep you organized and save time when packing since all your clothing items coordinate with one another in style and color palette. With a little bit of planning ahead of time and some creative mixing and matching skills, you can put together stylish looks no matter where travel takes you.

Here’s one more bit of wisdom: Packing cubes are life-changing.

Use packing cubes; pack them with similar items, and fit them in your suitcase like a glove. Save space, and stay organized. And when you remove them from your suitcase in your Airbnb or hotel room, they can be used as drawer liners. I am not sure what took me so long to try packing cubes.

Tech and Toys

  • Smartphone
  • Chargers
  • Portable Battery
  • Ipad or Laptop with Chargers
  • Kindle for Books. I know; I love to carry an actual book, too.
  • Airpods
  • Camera Bag (although, sometimes the smartphone camera is all you will need)
  • Necessary Medications
  • First Aid Kit

Reinforcements and Ten Practical Tips.

  1. Wear items on the plane that take up a lot of space. For example, those running shoes are super comfortable for travel day. Flights and airports are cold, so wear your hoodie, wrap/scarf, cardigan, or light jacket.
  2. Use packing cubes; they will keep you so organized. And when you unpack your suitcase in your Airbnb or hotel room, they can be used as drawer liners.
  3. Use bar shampoo, conditioner, face serum, moisturizer, and laundry detergent instead of those bulky liquid containers. This hack will save you from spillage, too.
  4. Store rolled-up socks or toiletries in your shoes.
  5. Use an e-reader such as Kindle Paperwhite or purchase audiobooks with audible (you will only need your iPhone and AirPods to listen).
  6. Minimize beauty products by packing smaller amounts in contact lens cases perfect for serums, moisturizers, under-the-eye creams, and even toothpaste. Or fill these containers that are TSA approved to carry on.
  7. If you think you don’t need it, you probably don’t. So, don’t pack it.
  8. Line your suitcase with fabric softener dryer sheets to keep everything smelling fresh.
  9. Pack a couple of canvas shopping bags for the market or souvenir shopping. And maybe even mesh bags for produce.
  10. Save your packing list when you get back. Go over your list when you return, cross off what you didn’t use, and add what you should have packed.
