I’m not mentally prepared for this show to end

Back when I was working at the Qantas magazine, I had a colleague, named Jamie, who was the oracle of amazing shows. Finished one? He’d have an even better suggestion to follow that up with.

He first told me about Homeland, a series dedicated to uncovering whether a captured US soldier had joined forces with Al-Qaeda to the detriment of American security. You follow eccentric and less-than-orthodox CIA agent, Carrie Mathison, as she works her way through the case. The writing is so clever, and although it can be quite heavy at times (we decided to come and go from this show), it’s captivating and the series finale was incredible.

Right, that’s done, now what?

Well, then Jamie recommended Designated Survivor, which we watched when we needed a break from Homeland. This series kicks off with an attack on Washington that kills the president and wipes out everybody in the line of succession. From here, a very down-the-food-chain cabinet minister, Tom Kirkman, is given the top job of president as he is the sole, (wait for it) designated survivor. A lot lighter than Homeland, President Kirkman is the loveable politician you wish we had more of- or do we? Another great show and I didn’t think Jamie could top this one.

How foolish of me, of course, he could, and he did!

Homeland was great, and Designated Survivor was amazing binging, but goodness me, This Is Us hits a different spot.

All. The. Feels.

If you haven’t seen this show, be sure to tune in with a box of tissues in arm’s reach. It is so so clever, emotionally charged with a feel-good/feel-I-can-never-recover-from-this vibe. The show transitions between decades as you watch the highs and lows of the Pearson family. I’ve always had a crush on Milo Ventimiglia from my Gilmore Girls days, but wow, Milo as Jack is just so good.

There are three episodes left in the series and then, that’s it.

What am I meant to do after this show I feel I’ve invested my heart into. At the end of each episode, Florian and I ask each other what the hell we’ll do when it ends, to which I often joke we should just start it again (I’m not joking)

I’ve laughed, I’ve cried (a lot) and then I cried again.

I don’t know how I will fill this hole in my life and it saddens me oh so much.

So, Jamie, you’ve got a lot of pressure to top this one- what’s next?
